A Quick History of the Early Years of Harley Davidson
The company was founded in 1903 by William Harley and Arthur, Walter and William Davidson in Milwaukee Wisconsin.
The very first Harley had a pedals and a seven cubic inch displacement engine that had a tough time conquering hills without the rider having to help out by pedaling.
With the help of Ole Evinrude, the inventor of the first outboard boat engine, Harley and the Davidsons built their second motorcycle that had the more modern a loop-frame design and a single cylinder engine with a displacement of about twenty five inches.
The company built a handful of bikes in 1905 and in 1906 built around fifty in their new factory on Juneau Avenue that remains the headquarters today.
In 1911 the company came out with an updated version of the V-Twin engine that was first introduced in 1907.
Motorcycle production in these first years jumped from 450 in 1908, about 1,100 in 1909 and then soared to over sixteen thousand in 1914.
For World War 1 Harley Davidson made around 15,000 war-ready bikes for the United Sates government.
The 1920's saw the Harley engine reach 74 cubic inches, bikes that exceeded one hundred miles an hour on the track and the company becoming the largest manufacturer of motorcycles on earth.
